Fort Santiago

Fort Santiago was one of the very historical place in the City of Manila. It is located inside the walled city of Intramuros. It is situated beside Pasig River as a strategically design for safety of the palace and kingdom of Rajah Suleiman, a Muslim chieftain of pre-Hispanic Manila. It was destroyed by the conquistadors (Martin de Goiti) when, upon arriving in 1570, they encountered several battles with the Islamic natives. The Spaniards destroyed the native settlements and erected the Fuerza de Santiago in 1571.

 



It is also the place where Jose P. Rizal was imprisoned before he was executed in 1896. His footsteps was replicated and embedded as a bronze footstep from his cell going to the execution area.

















But now a days, Fort Santiago was considered one of the tourist attraction in the Metro. Most of the field trips, photo shoot, pre-nuptials, etc. are done on this place. Because of its beautiful architecture and attractions. Entrance fee varies from age and status. It is open daily from 8:00am to 6:00pm.

How to go to Fort Santiago?

By Light Rail Transit - LRT. Get off at the United Nations Station. From there it is only a 15 to 20 minutes walk to the gates of Intramuros. You can ride a "Pedicab" (bicycle with a sidecar) or take a jeepney that will head you to Bonifacio Drive. But if you can afford to take a taxi cab. That's the easiest way.
